Recently moved-in freshmen share what items they love the most in their rooms.

A group of four freshmen huddled in the doorway of Getsch 314, waiting for floormates Jack Taylor and Alex Palm to finish unpacking their corner room. The high humidity and heat of the move made for a stuffy hallway, and the group was ready to get back outside.
Inside the room, Taylor’s and Palm’s families unfolded clothes and organized desk drawers. For Taylor, Palm and hundreds of other freshmen moving into their dorms, plenty of mini fridges, lamps and plants in terracotta pots were crammed into corners and shoved under lofted beds.
But of all of their possessions, what items are their favorites? What are the things these students can’t live without? What things represent them the most? The Clarion went to the four freshman dorm halls to ask the newly moved freshmen their thoughts — here are their answers.
Q: What item in your room represents you the most and why?
Alex Palm, Getsch: I’m gonna go with the Arctic King Mini Fridge… because I’m an empty vessel, ready to be filled with nice things.
Jack Taylor, Getsch: I’m capping off of him, but I’m going to do the mini fridge, too… I’m kind of a cool person.
Annie Anderson, Edgren: I’d probably say [this tapestry] just because it’s by my favorite artist and I’m studying graphic design, so I just like art.
Maili Buttenhoff, Edgren: I’d say just my blankets. I really love to be in my bed. Having a comfy area [in my room] is definitely one of my biggest things.
Q: Which item in your dorm that means the most to you?
Eli Laufenburger, Edgren: My guitar, for sure. I started playing just over a year ago and it’s a fun instrument. I try to play every day. I play at my church’s summer camp, so I love playing camp songs.
Michaela Sullivan, Bodien: Probably my crochet decorations. I have these leaves; I crocheted these little flower things, too. I didn’t bring [my blanket]. It didn’t match.
Q: What is your favorite item in your room?
Avery Nelson, Nelson: I love biking and books are great, so these [bookends].
Hannah Addink, Nelson: Oh, I got it. I bought this at Target for myself. It says, “Congrats on Adulting.”
