The Bethel University women’s soccer team came up short of victory in its home game against Macalester College Tuesday, after its one goal lead was diminished, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
For the past 30 years, the Royals have a record of 6-20-3 against the Scots. That gap evened out over the last twelve seasons and the teams stand at 1-1-2 since 2021, when they returned from the one-year pandemic-related pause in athletics.
The Royals showed up to dominate against the Scots, outshooting their opponent 12-2 in the scoreless first half and setting the tone early for a physical 90 minutes. Bethel junior Malia Beilby scored the game’s first goal just under ten minutes into the second half after shooting a bouncing ball within a few yards of Macalester’s goal line. Beilby tallied eight of her team’s 20 total shots.
In the second half, Macalester’s offense picked up intensity, tripling its original two shots and finishing out with eight total. With under five minutes remaining in the game and nearing a Bethel victory, a Scots free kick saw Macalester junior Sophie Jones score, ultimately leaving a hard-fought battle against the Royals in a 1-1 draw.
The Royals play next against Hamline University at Pat Patterson Field this Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
