The Bethel University men’s and women’s basketball teams took on Hamline University Saturday. The women came away with a 52-33 victory, while the men fell 73-56.
Below are photos from the games.
Women’s basketball:
The Royals took a physical victory from the third-place Pipers with just two games left to play. The win sealed the Royals as a top-two seed in the MIAC tournament, and they still hold a narrow lead over Gustavus Adolphus College for first. Bethel held Hamline to just 21.3% shooting during the game and only allowed the Pipers four free throw attempts.
Bethel fifth-year guard Anna Garfield led all scorers with 14 points while senior forward Elly Schmitz added 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Royals head to Duluth Wednesday to take on the College of St. Scholastica for their penultimate game of the season. They’ll play host the College of St. Benedict’s Feb. 22 as the season finale.
Men’s basketball:
The men dropped their eighth consecutive game Saturday, falling to 5-9 in the MIAC. They’re now in seventh place in the MIAC — two games behind sixth-place Concordia College for the final playoff spot. Hamline scored 24 points off turnovers and won the battle in the paint 38-28, a battle Bethel has struggled to win this season.
Sophomore guard led all scorers with 18 points for the Royals while freshman forward Colter Stone was the only other Royal with double digits at 10.
Bethel takes on the College of Saint Scholastica, to whom they lost at home Jan. 22, Wednesday before closing out the season at home against St. John’s University Feb. 22. The Royals will officially eliminate themselves from the playoffs with one more loss or one more Concordia win.
