Vice president for Student Life Dr. William Washington braced the outdoor cold for an inward warmth.
By Dr. Washington
I was content and comfortable at the institution where I had attended as an undergrad and served various professional capacities for over 28 years. My wife and I would often remark that if I left that place, we would move somewhere warm where I could work on my suntan year-round!
Minnesota, especially this year, would not fall under the category of “warm.”
Although I was looking for a warm climate, the Lord was looking for me to be in a warm community.
So, who is Bethel? What makes Bethel a warm community?
It’s the people – students, staff, faculty, administration, alumni. When I first had the opportunity to interact with students, I experienced first-hand their thoughtfulness, character, and integrity. I saw how much they loved each other and the Lord.
Bethel University is shaping young people to become Christ-followers who are making a transformational difference in the world.
Bethel is a compassionate and generous community. Students and staff spend their spring breaks serving on mission trips. Students give up their flex money to food shelters, and are passionate about making an impact locally and globally.
Bethel authentically cares for one another. Case in point, many within the Bethel community have traveled and visited ‘17 graduate Levi Bauer, who is currently battling health issues. When I purchased my home in Minnesota, colleagues and students from Bethel assisted in the demolition and remodeling of my town house.
Bethel is strong. Students, staff and faculty wrestle with hard questions and topics together. Student Ministries hosts “Deeper,” allowing students to ask and engage in deep questions about faith, life, and relationships. Student-athletes and coaches work through rigorous practices and game schedules together. Our teams are dedicated to to academic integrity and competitive excellence.
Bethel is salt and light to the world. I am amazed by the caliber of our graduates. They give of their time, talent, and treasure, and it is honorable and pleasing to the Lord. Our graduates are becoming pastors, business owners, world travelers, spouses and parents who are making a difference for the Christ’s kingdom.
When I think about our stellar academic programs, the commitment of our faculty, the dedication of our staff, and high level of campus engagement, it’s evident that this is why Bethel radiates warmth.
Our current students and graduates are recognized for their preparedness as well as their love of the Lord. Bethel is in the business of transforming lives, and by God’s grace, I get to be a part of that warmth, too.
