ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — A Saint-Benedict-sweep took two key wins from Bethel University’s softball team Saturday afternoon in a final regular season double-header at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
Bethel failed to score any runs in its first game, mustering four hits. Saint Benedict capitalized on the Royals’ rough start, tallying its first four runs in the second inning, two more in the third and its final two in the fourth, ending with an 8-0 first-game win.
Though the second game once again found Bethel trailing throughout, the Royals picked up momentum, outhitting the Bennies 11-9 in the end. Down 1-4 going into the bottom of the final inning, the Royals managed two more runs, falling just short of tying the score.
In the end, Bethel couldn’t find the footing to win, and the final game of both teams’ regular seasons ended in a 4-3 Bennies win.
The Royals’ double-loss cemented their fifth-seed MIAC playoff spot, meaning they will begin the post-season Thursday, playing for the chance to advance to the semifinals against first-ranked Saint Mary’s University.
The Royals play Macalester College in the MIAC quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at Macalester Softball Complex.
