Former Clarion editor Sarah Bakeman once told me, “You’re like Anthony Bourdain to me, and you need to start a show where you go out and try stuff,” after sending me an Instagram reel of a man on a street corner in India making a Coca-Cola omelette.
I took her advice, cooked up a tacky name for a food reviewing series and set out on a quest to find my first restaurant to review. On a 70 degree night in mid-October, I stumbled upon a small Irish pub serving fish and chips.

- What: The Anchor Fish and Chips
- Cuisine: Irish and American fare
- Where: 302 13th Ave NE Minneapolis, MN 55413
- Cost: $10-20
- Distance from Bethel: 16 minutes
With a variety of meal options, ranging from seafood to burgers and sandwiches, I asked for the most popular item on the menu. The waiter recommended the classic fish and chips: a generous portion of hand-cut fries, or chips as they call them in Ireland, and breaded wild Alaskan Cod, both fried in beef tallow, costing $17.50.
The fish was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside and perfectly cooked. While some opt for haddock or pollock in fish and chips, as they tend to have a sharper, “fishy” taste, I thought the cod was the perfect balance for the amateur seafood enjoyer. Their homemade tartar sauce, malt vinegar and salt to top it off made for a delicious meal on a rainy Sunday evening.
